First Look
Each box comes with a new kitchen tool for your child. The “Rome” box comes with some 9″ red kitchen tongs. These full-size kitchen tools can be used again for a new recipe.
The recipes and instructions all fit in a fold-out packet.
Your first shipment is themed after “Rome, Italy.”
A parent safety card was included to ensure a parent or adult helper is present when a child is cooking a recipe.
Bucatini All'Amatriciana
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Serves: 4 to 6
- Total Time: 45 minutes
Amatriciana is a famous Roman pasta from a town north of Rome called Amatrice. This pasta is made with tomatoes, Pecorino Romano cheese, black or red pepper, and a pork product called guanciale. I didn't get a chance to make this recipe, but we are making it soon.
Cacio E Pepe
The Cacio E Pepe dish is made with Pecorino Romano cheese, spaghetti, and black pepper. My grocery store didn't have Pecorino Romano, so I used Parmesan Romano, which I know is not the same. The dish turned out to be a salty cheese combination that was good.
- Difficulty: Intermediate
- Serves: 4
- Total Time: 40 minutes
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Serves: 4 to 6
- Total Time: 45 minutes
This is the finished dish. We ended up having some pieces of cheese instead of a cheese sauce consistency, but I think that was the cheese that we used. The flavor was great, and my family enjoyed it. My youngest, my cook, doesn't eat pasta, but I did get him to try this one.
Pizza Bianca
- Difficulty: Beginner
- Serves: 8
- Total Time: 1 1/4 hours, plus 2 hours rising time and 15 mins cooling time.
I have never made homemade bread in any form, so this was a fun recipe to make. The recipe recommended a stand mixer with a bread hook, but this mama doesn't have one. We ended up mixing the bread the old-fashioned way, and it turned out well.
The recipe made a giant dish of bread which was topped with rosemary. It didn't have a strong flavor, so you could top it with garlic butter if you wanted.
This is a look at our dinner plate. This is a smaller portion than my teenage son, so there was plenty to go around.
Chocolate Semifreddo
- Difficulty: Advanced
- Serves: 8
- Total Time: 1 hour, plus 2 hours of freezing time
This recipe was very much “advanced.” It was the hardest of the recipes, and my son needed a lot of help to make the dish. The word “semifreddo” means half-frozen” in Italian. This is lighter than ice cream and similar to a frozen mousse. The two main ingredients in this dish are whipped cream and heavy cream.
You had to make the whipped cream, which was then folded with the chocolate.
We poured the semifreddo into small ramekins and freeze them. Once they are frozen, you sit them in the refrigerator for two hours. This was very tasty and made for a wonderful dessert. It's really rich, so my son shared his with me.
Once you unfold the folder, there is more information about Italy. There is also a space to write notes about each recipe.
Marble Maze
After your child makes the recipe, they can put together this marble maze, which looks like a bowl of pasta.
