Original Beans Beni Wild Harvest 66%
This is a dark chocolate bar, bit it's a pretty mild bar. You can taste the slightly fruity flavors in the chocolate.
From the company: “Since 2008, Original Beans has ventured into remote rainforests to source the world’s rarest cacao beans and transform the cultures of chocolate, food, and luxury. Original Beans founder, Philipp Kauffmann, represents the 7th generation in a family of recognized nature explorers and conservationists who coined the term “sustainability.” Philipp gave up his job at the United Nations in New York to grow Original Beans as a leading brand for a world in which we regenerate what we consume. For each bar purchased, Original Beans plants a tree with their initiative, One Bar One Tree.“
Tasting notes: Floral Honey, Apricot, & Jasmine Tea
Marou Dong Nai Pod to Bar 72%
This is a dark chocolate bar with a bit of spice, though it doesn't taste like it. This wasn't a favorite out of the box, but it wasn't bad either.
From the company: “Marou was one of the first bean to bar makers in Asia. When Vincent Mourou left his advertising career in San Francisco, he moved to Vietnam to find himself. This is when Vincent met Samuel Maruta, a banker from France living in Saigon with his wife and two kids. The two had nothing but a blender, an oven, cake tins, and Sam's kitchen. Samuel and Vincent continue to work with a tight network of small farmers who they buy the best quality beans from. This chocolate is made with cocoa that is produced at MAROU’s own cacao fermentation and drying station near Cat Tien Natural Park in Dong Nai province, making it a very rare ‘pod-to-bar’ chocolate. This chocolate is mild with surprising notes of spice.“
Tasting notes: Red Fruit & Spice
Dick Taylor Brown Butter with Nibs & Sea Salt 73%
My husband and I both really loved this bar. It has a nice dark chocolate flavor and is covered with dark chocolate bits and salt. This is a vibrant bar, so you need a bit to satisfy your sweet tooth.
From the company: “This chocolate bar is a deliciously rich bar that simply sings! With cacao from Akesson Plantation of Madagascar, Fazenda Camboa of Brazil, and organic cane sugar from Brazil, they craft their 73% Northerner Blend. The chocolate is combined with browned butter from local Rumiano Family creamery to create an ultra-creamy foundation for crunchy roasted cacao nibs and delicate sea salt.“
Tasting Notes: Nutty, Tangy, Caramel
Cafe Ubuntu Coffee Chocolate
This was my husband's favorite bar in the box. It's a mix of chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavor. My husband loves caramel mochas, and this chocolate tastes very similar.
From the company “Raw dark chocolate – Rounded off with Café Ubuntu’s blend, an East African coffee with a sweet finish. Chocolate with notes of golden raisins, maple and fig.“
Blanxart Organic Dark Chocolate
This was the darkest chocolate in the box and my favorite bar. If you love dark chocolate, this simple bar will be a huge winner.
From the company “Criollo beans from Peru characterize this chocolate, although the delicate creaminess and smooth flavor indicates the generous coca butter usage in this bar. Surprisingly approachable for such a dark chocolate, give a taste of this to any naysayers
Beginning all the way back in 1954 in Barcelona, Blanxart has been churning out quality chocolates and bombons for well over a half-century. With the same eye-catching logo and art and an attention to detail, Blanxart looks to be continuing their legacy of quality for some time yet!!“
