KiwiCo has a new box that's all about Geography, Atlas Crate. Atlas Crate is $19.95/month and designed for children 6-11 years old. It explores new countries and cultures around the world. Your child starts their subscription with the World Crate. The box introduces your child to Atlas Crate's featured characters Anya the cricket and Milo the sandpiper. Your child will also learn about how to read maps and basic navigational skills. There is also a fun craft!
Atlas Crate ships in a purple box.
First Look. There is an envelope with the information to start the journey.
The packet is tied together like important documents.
Anya the cricket and Milo the sandpiper both have introductions to the box.
Your child will do the following in this crate:
- Take the World Map Challenge
- Make Milo's Marvelous Treat Mix
- Build your own Spinning Globe
- Start your Atlas Adventure Book
- Find your official Altas button
Atlas Adventure Book The adventure book includes information about all the continents. The book has two holes punched in the sides and comes with two rings. Your child can build the book and refer to it to learn about the World.
Each card in the book features the continent, animal and facts about that continent.
My 9-year-old loved the penguins.
The back has more interesting facts about the continent. I really enjoyed reading these with my kids. I learned something new too!
Milo's Marvelous Trail Mix You can bake a yummy trail mix with banana chips, dried cranberries, chocolate chips, pepitas, and sunflower seeds. I need to make a trip to the store and my kids and I will make this later.
Official Altas Button My 6 year old grabbed the button and put it on first thing. He was ready to start the mission.
Build your own Spinning Globe The box includes everything to make a real spinning globe. All you need for the craft is the plastic globe, wooden pieces, felt sticker continents and directions.
The direction book shows you how and where to place the stickers on the globe. The instruction also explains the equator, why the globe spins and why the globe is tilted. My 6-year-old loves crafts and he also enjoyed learning more about the globe.
The first step was to put the plastic globe together and stick on all the continents.
Second, you use the wooden pieces to make the stand.
You put everything together, place the heart where you live and it's done!
Take the World Map Challenge The map challenge includes what you need to know about maps.
- Map Key
- Compass Rose
- Latitude
- Longitude
As you open the paper, you learn more facts. My 9 year old learned these things earlier this year, so I went over it with my 6-year-old.
Inside the paper, you can check off The Seven Summits and The Seven Wonders of the world. Each one gives you information about how to find each point. My 6-year-old and I did this part together.
Each place includes facts about it and where to find it.
The box included a huge map. This is great to hang on a wall and it is used for the activities on the paper.
My 9 year old took over and used the latitude and longitudes to find the answer to the trivia questions and places where interesting animals live. He tried to guess the answers before locating each place.
My kids completed everything! The back of the paper has a list of sunken ships and you had to find their locations. There is also an answer key on the bottom of the paper, so you will know if your child gets it right.
Final Thought: Atlas Crate was a huge hit with both of my kids. My 9-year-old loved the box the most because he really enjoys Geography. He recognized some of the trivia questions and animals from our travels. Both of my kids learned something in a fun and exciting way, which is what I like to see from a box.
