Home Chef is a home meal subscription that is $9.95/person per meal. One of the really unique features of Home Chef is their huge menu. Each week there is over 10 meals to choose from. You can pick your regular meals and then add-on shakes and breakfast items. If you have read my reviews, you know I am a really picky eater, though I didn't have any problem selecting my meals for review. Home Chef can also accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free diets.
When you sign up, you fill out a short profile and Home Chef will give you recommendations, although you can select any meal you wish. Shipping is free for orders over $40.00 and you can skip any week you want. You can also select the day your box is delivered (Tues-Fri).
The Details:
Cost: $9.95/person. You can choose between 2 or 4 meals per box.
Coupon: Use this link to get $30.00 off your 1st box.
What's in the box? Each box comes with your selected meals, all packaged so your food stays fresh.
Note: We ordered the two plate box, so each meal made two meals. There is so much food, there is always enough to share with our two small children. If you have older kids (mine are 4 and 7), you probably want the 4 plate box.
Home Chef ships by FedEx in a large box.
All the recipe cards are packed on top of the box. The front of the recipe card lists how long it takes to prepare, how hard the recipe is and how quickly you should make the meal. The back of the information card has detailed instructions and a list of all the ingredients you need.
Pan-Seared Steak with Garlic-Tomato Sauce and crispy Parmesan potato cakes
I know I have said this before, but we always select the steak in meal subscription boxes. Steak is very expensive and our family loves the meat. The meat and potato combo really appealed to me.
This recipe was level intermediate, but not too hard for this novice cook. The potatoes were the most difficult to cook correctly. I love Home Chef's instructions. They are very easy to follow and I have never ran into a problem.
All the ingredients arrived very fresh.
Home Chef has the biggest portions of any meal subscription. I typically share my meal with my 7-year-old and my husband shares with our 4-year-old. Our 4-year-old is super picky, so he honestly doesn't eat much. Our 7-year-old is a pretty good eater and will try stuff, even if it looks “weird”. The steak was juicy and mixed with the tomato and garlic sauce, it was amazing. I actually don't eat tomatoes, but really loved them in the sauce. In the last year, I have really made a strong effort to learn to enjoy new foods.
This is a closer look at the dish. My potatoes don't look the same as the recipe card, but they were very tasty!
Spooky Turkey Cauldron Pie with vegetables and puff pastry
When I first saw this meal, I knew I had to have this. I would never attempt this outside a meal subscription, but I was up to the challenge this month.
This was an intermediate recipe, but the jack-o-lantern look tricky!
Once again, the ingredients were fresh!
The finished dish! The puff pastry was really easy. You just roll out the dough more, then cut out the face and bake. The filling was super easy and it turned out great.
This is a better look at all the ingredients. The puff pastry mixed really well with the filling.
Final Thought: I really love this subscription. Our family personally subscribes, because we love the food selection week after week. Skipping a week is super easy and you can skip multiple weeks at a time. I recommend putting a reminder in your phone, to select or skip your meals. Both of the dinners were fantastic this week.
