Blue Apron Review (November 4th meal selection) + 3 Free Meals
Hi all! It’s Kristi doing another guest review, and this time I’m doing another meal subscription box review. I love to cook, and have now tried several Blue Apron boxes. I’m super excited to try some more fancy recipes this week!
Blue Apron is a meal subscription box that sends you delicious recipes and all the ingredients you need to make the dishes. There are two plans, a two-person plan and a family plan. The two-person plan is $59.94/box or 9.99 per serving. The two-person box includes two plates of three different meals (six services). The family box is $69.92/box for two four-person meals, (eight services) or $8.74/serving.
When you sign up, you check all the kinds of food you like. Each week, you will be sent meals based on your preferences. Shipping is free and you can skip any week or cancel any time.
***So, this was a week I ran into the menu I selected not being allowed together. I wanted a cauliflower sandwich, but had to do the crispy chicken instead***
Blue Apron ships in a great big box!
Sealed tight for maximum freshness!
This week's first look!
Fresh meat (most of the time it says use within nine days, so it doesn't have to be frozen).
This week there was this as a surprise. I guess since there were quality issues the last couple of weeks, this was a thank you 🙂
First up was Crispy Chicken.
All the ingredients……and yes, that is only one potato and four kale leaves for two adults…..
Cooking!
So, this was the amount of kale and potatoes for two adults…it wasn't enough…and I did need to add milk to the potatoes to make them smooth.
The finished product. I have to be honest…this was pretty much the first meal I was super meh about. The chicken wasn't flavorful and it was the first time I felt like we didn't have enough food. Coupled with the fact that I had selected a different meal I couldn't get, I was more unhappy. I probably could have made double this amount for $8 total myself.
Next up was Roasted Pork. So, again, I had selected pork meatballs, but got an email that it was being subbed with a different pork. Same basic ingredients, different recipe.
Ready to go!
Prepping!
Cooking!
The finished product! I really liked this. I ended up not minding the substitution. I did have to microwave the pork, because somehow even after cooking longer than the instructions, it wasn't done. I really like the beets and cranberries. It was a nice fall dish!
Last up was the South Indian Squash Curry.
All the goodies!
Cooking the rice and squash mixture.
The finished product! There was A LOT of squash mix left over too. So, this was strike two this week. Neither of us liked it. We ended up eating Chick Fil A after cooking this. The rice was good, and we've both had curry before, but it just wasn't great. I really tried to keep eating it, but couldn't.
Final Thought: So, I hate to say this week was a huge miss. Between not being able to get the selection I wanted, to a changed recipe, to not enough food with the chicken, and a couple recipes being meh. I will chalk it up to every once in a while it may be off. Hindsight, maybe I should have skipped this week, which you can do. A few tips-ALWAYS HAVE OLIVE OIL! Most all recipes call for some olive oil, and that’s the only thing not included. KEEP THE GARLIC CLOVE! Usually, more than one recipe calls for it. I always manage to throw it away, then need it. The downside is my kids aren’t super excited about the selection/we’d have to up to a four person box if they would. If you have a busy schedule and love to cook, this would be a great option to try! After you are a subscriber you can skip a week any time. ***There are limitations on the choices you can make….some combinations aren’t allowed*** Use this link to get 3 Free Meals with your subscription.
