Kiwi Crate July 2016 Review
The July 2016 Kiwi Crate created a water wheel. Kiwi Crate is a fun activity and craft subscription box for kids 5-8. Crates are $19.95/month and filled with Explore magazine, along with featured crafts. Kiwi Crate is our family's first subscription box and it's one of my favorite subscription boxes for kids.

What's in the box? Every month you'll receive all the materials and inspiration for projects related to a theme such as music, gardening, dinosaurs or colors. Projects may include arts and crafts, science activities, imaginative play and more. We've hand selected and kid tested projects that are open-ended and encourage curiosity, exploration and creativity!
What ages is Kiwi Crate for? Ages 5-8 but older children can enjoy it too.
Can I skip? Yes – if you do not want to receive a crate for a period of time, you can pause your subscription for 1, 2 or 3 months. To pause, log into My Account page, click “Manage Subscription” next to the subscription that you'd like to pause and then click Pause. You will not be charged while your subscription is paused. Your subscription will automatically resume after the pause period is complete. Pause by 7:00 PM EST on the 4th of the month to avoid being billed for the next crate.
How do I cancel? You can cancel or skip from your account.
I like that they put the theme of the box on the outside of the box now.
First Look
Explore Magazine always is packed with fun activities, cartoons, recipes and more.
There is always a cartoon featuring Steve the Kiwi Bird.
There was a two page spread explained hydropower and how it works. My son always enjoys reading these pages in the magazine.
In the magazine, there are a few activities you can do with items in your own home.
In the back of the book, there were fun activity to make fold out animals.
The instructions for all the water wheel projects were in a little magazine.
The first pages have a list of all the items in the box. There is also a breakdown of each activity with information about the messiness and parental involvement needed for each activity.
Build Your Water Wheel: Messiness (High), Grownup Involvement (Medium).
Build Your Wheel: The first part of the project, was to make the wheel. The instructions were easy to follow and my son can complete everything by himself.
The pieces to make the full water wheel project were made of thick plastic and quite colorful.

The second part of the project was to build the frame. This was slightly more difficult than the wheel, but L still didn't need much help.
I love watching my son concentrate and complete the crafts. The instructions are easy to follow, so L can follow the directions while I cook dinner.
Making the boat: The last step of the project is to make the little boat that is tied to the water wheel.
The boat is made of foam and corks, so it is easy to float.
Put Water to Work: Messiness (High), Grownup Involvement (Medium).
Once the water wheel was assembled, L got to use and play with it.
The water wheel is made to pour from the top and then wheel is pulled to the dock. There were several trouble shooting tips on how to make the process work better.
The only additional item needed for this craft is an inflatable pool.

Create Splash Art Messiness (High), Grownup Involvement (Medium).
The last project was to create fun art with ink, paper and a straw.
There was a straw, animal shapes, white paper and themed sheets.
You put a dot of ink, then blow to create fun patterns.
These are the finished sheets, which turned out so cute.
L loved this project so much, that he created some ones on blank paper.
