There was a fantastic detailed newsletter titled “Malt of the Earth” helped be a conversation starter between my friends and I about the beers in the box. Given details about some breweries involved as well as history on well known types of beers like the Pilsner.

Dirty Blonde Pale Ale from the Adirondack Brewery. This brew is classified as an American Pale Ale. The ABV (or Alcohol by Volume) content was listed as 4.8%. The IBU (or International Bittering Units) number was 25. My friends and I enjoyed this light beer.  We started off tasting this one because it was a lighter beer and this style of beer was my favorite.

Organic Porter from Butte Creek Brewing. This brew is classified as an American Porter. The ABV (or Alcohol by Volume) content was listed as 6.0%. The IBU (or International Bittering Units) number was 18. The beer is compared to a chocolate cake. I tasted this beer last since it was going to be the darkest and most bitter potentially. The beer wasn't as bitter as expected. I am not against drinking darker beers, but when given choice I would choose a lighter Pilsner. I was surprised this beer didn't have the taste expected from a porter, but the smell was unpleasant enough to keep me from finishing it.

Xingu Black Beer – (*pronounced “shin-goo”) is a unique beer from Brazil. This brew is referred to as a “black beer”, but the information told us not to confuse it with German style black beer. The ABV (or Alcohol by Volume) content was listed as 4.7%. There wasn't a bitterness rating for this beer to be found. Trying this beer was such a fun experience for me and my friends. Pouring the beer it has a foam on top and is totally opaque like a black hole not letting light out. Given that description the bitterness was expected to be high. However, after tasting the beer it was more like a wine than a beer which totally redefined what we would think of when we throw around “dark beer” vs “light beer”. The taste was full and pleasant.

Staropilsen a pilsner educating beer from the Czech Republic. The ABV (or Alcohol by Volume) content was listed as 4.7%. My friends and I liked this the most of the 4 beers. It wasn't bitter and it fit more comfortably with what majority of us start with drinking or still prefer in American domestic or light mexican beers.

Final Thought: The Beer of the Month Club with the Malt of the Earth newsletter is a nice box for people wanting to try different types of beers. I turned out to be  more surprised than I thought I would be. This subscription is definitely worth the money and I looks forward to learning and drinking more with my friends.   If you want to subscribe, use this link with of of the following codes:
